Network Distribution Models
You may have heard them referred to as continuous moves, reverse relays, tours, or even DSD backhauls. This is where an outbound load from one facility makes their deliveries then swings by a second facility and delivers a second load on the way back home. This essentially eliminates a complete round trip from the second facility.
When you have multiple distribution centers you know you ought to be leveraging that by running your transportation model as a network rather than a bunch of individual facilities acting as silos. But how?
Network distribution goes well beyond simply marrying up outbound loads from multiple facilities into round trips. You have to consider all the complexities of DOT compliance, delivery windows, trailer type requirements, warehouse loading schedules, driver payroll rules at different sites, layover offsets, driver bids, etc. to make the creation of these cost-saving tours a reality.
