Ontime Delivery Analysis

Consider the variables involved in tracking on time delivery in the grocery industry. Delivery schedules are constructed by location, by day of week, by time window and by commodity. There could easily be multiple deliveries per day and time windows can overlap. While day of week is a schedule constraint delivery windows can (and do) cross the threshold of midnight.

When you think through all of the challenges in compiling an accurate record of on time delivery it shouldn’t be surprising how inaccurate most on time delivery reports are.

Store delivery schedules are typically maintained within your routing software. While most routing packages at least plan to be on time, the tenuous MPH estimates along with no knowledge of routing changes means it’s unreliable on its own as a measuring stick for on time delivery performance.

On Board Computer systems are excellent tools to track accurate arrival and departure times. Unfortunately they rarely support delivery schedules used in grocery (i.e. by location, by day of week, time window, by commodity).

Typical on time delivery reports almost always overstate the on time percentage. Most often they are a better reflection of the percentage of customers that didn’t complain about a delivery missing the window rather than a true representation of service level performance.

The key is to keep an accurate grocery delivery schedule that can track not just what you planned to do but process updates of times that the loads actually arrived. CAMS tracks the store delivery schedule for you and processes actual arrival and departure timestamps from the on board computer system interface. Stores will often schedules crews to restock based on delivery windows. So the windows are important. Early isn’t on time – it’s early.

CAMS Profiler also has the ability to track historical arrival times by day of week by route group (commodity). This establishes a baseline for delivery performance and indicates where the deliveries deviate from the expected arrival time. In other words, putting aside delivery windows for a moment, if the load typically arrives at 8:00 AM on Wednesdays with produce, CAMS Profiler can show you how many times the delivery deviated from that time and by how much.
